“The Gor Project - 1: Photograph of a model attired as a Gorean “kajira” (slave-girl), wearing a Gorean “camisk” garment (i.e. a belted narrow sideless poncho worn without underwear), and with a simulated “kef” brand on her thigh, as described in John Norman’s Gor series of science-fiction books.” Photographer: Marcus J. Turn into one.
Starting in 1966, but really picking up In the 1970s, John Norman started publishing his series of infamous, unreadable “Gor” novels. In his fantasy, collars were the hallmark of sex slaves, and “collared” and “enslaved” were interchangeable terms. This was probably the major source of collar-as-symbol for BDSM.
