The Acropolis of Athens, Greece

(by k-rlitos)

While poking around the internet I ran across a picture (the first one) and just had to find one more about it.  It turns out to be the abandoned town of Craco (originally called Graculum or Cracum).  Craco flourished during 8th century BC up until the 6th century BC, before Roman times.  Then not much is recorded about Craco until the 10th century AD, at which time the town’s repopulation was carried out by Basilian monks.  In 1799, the population adhered to Republican ideals, rising up against the power of the nobility who were feudatories. The rebellion was repressed in blood and crushed by the troops of Cardinal Ruffo.  But the town was ultimately abandoned due to landslides which caused many of the building to collapse.  The town is now considered one of the top 10 abandon ghost towns in the world.

As you can see in the third picture modern buildings and roads are next to these beautiful ruins.  But would you believe the town was abandoned in 1973?  Looking at the pictures I don’t see any signs of modern day life, no cars, no telephone poles nor TV antennas, so how did they live?  I would love to tour this town and the Keep.
